These trees are growing on a boulder on the trail to Castle Rock in Blue Mountain Lake, NY. Could there be a less promising place for trees to grow? It must have taken years for the soil to form - the gathering and breaking down of leaves and needles, moss growing and breaking down the rock into a usable form so that the seeds of the trees could take root. Now, it is a small forest.
There is a lesson here - when we get frustrated with our slow progress towards real community, remember that anything worthwhile takes time.
